About the Northern Rivers Rail Trail

When it is complete, the Northern Rivers Rail Trail will go from Murwillumbah to Casino.

The sections from Crabbes Creek to Murwillumbah and from Casino to Lismore are now open.

The Lismore to Eltham section should be built next, with funding being sourced currently. The Crabbes Creek to Eltham section, through the Byron Shire, is in the feasibility study stage.

Once complete, the trail will span a total of 132 km.

Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek

This 24 km section of the trail was the first section of the trail completed.

It was opened on March 1st 2023 and travels from Murwillumbah on the Tweed River through Stokers Siding, Burringbar and Mooball to Crabbes Creek.

Bentley to Casino

This 13.4 km section of the trail was the second section of the trail completed.

This section was opened on March 23rd 2024. It travels from Bentley, over Naughton’s Gap and on to the Casino railway station; when complete, this will be the conclusion of a 132 km ride from end to end.

Lismore to Bentley

This 16.3 km section was be the third section of the trail completed.

It was completed on December 14, 2024. This section of the trail will links Lismore to Casino through beautiful rural landscapes.

Eltham to Lismore

This 15.5 km section of the trail will be the fourth section of the trail completed.

It is awaiting funding and will be built following the completion of the Lismore to Bentley Section. It travels from the town of Eltham, through the town of Bexhill and on to Lismore, finally crossing the Wilsons River into South Lismore.

Crabbes Creek to Eltham

The 62.8 km section from Crabbes Creek to Eltham travels through the Byron shire and is currently in the feasibility study stage. It will connect the trail with the towns of Mullumbimby, Byron Bay and Bangalow.

Encourage the council and state government to complete this section by emailing Byron Shire Council and the State MP for Ballina, Tamara Smith and telling them you care!
